Cagliari

A little history.

The Metropolitan city of Cagliari (in Sardinian Casteddu) is an Italian comune of 154 224 inhabitants and capital of the autonomous region of Sardinia. It is a city of ancient origins, has been in the past and is still the historical administrative center of the island. During the Roman period under the name of Caralis it was chosen as the capital of the province of Sardinia et Corsica and was later the capitol of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Its importance goes far beyond the administrative aspects because its historical events and its cultural footprints will influence those of the whole island but above all the area that has been part of Cagliari: The Oristano and the Ogliastra. Although traces of settlements from the Prenuragic era were found and dating back to the 3rd millennium B.C. , the actual population of this area is traced back to the maritime trades of the 1st millennium B.C. Trade mainly concerned copper, obsidian, ceramics and swords. Today the international port of Cagliari carries out important commercial, industrial, tourist and passenger service functions.

Territory and climate

Cagliari, (as well as Rome, Lisbon, Prague and Istanbul) was built on seven limestone hills, which to date are identified in the city quarters of Castello, Tuvumannu/Tuvixeddu, Monte Claro, Monte Urpinu, Colle di Bevella, Colle di San Michele, Calamosca/Sella of the Devil. If the hilly areas gather the historical districts of the city, the flat part favoured the urban expansion from the nineteenth century onwards.

The city has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers and the average annual temperature is at 17 °c. Frequent winds, especially the Mistral and the Sirocco.
